Historical Note

The West Granite Mountain Mining Company was formed in February 1886, to acquire and develop the Alameda, Rattlesnake, and Fraction lodes on Granite Mountain near Philipsburg. The incorporators were A.M. Holter, H.M. Parchen, T.J. Lowry, Edward I. Zimmerman, Charles K. Wells, and George H. Hill of Helena; Samuel Word of Butte; Thomas Cruse of Marysville; and J.W. Buskett of Wickes. In addition to the original three lodes, the Company acquired the Elizabeth, the Daisy, the Comet, the Douglas, the Butte, and the Clear Grit lodes, all in the Granite Mountain area. Headquarters for the Company were in Helena. The Company operated the mines until mid-1889. The properties were then apparently acquired by the Bi-Metallic Mining Company and eventually became part of the massive Granite-BiMetallic Consolidated Mining Company property.
