Historical Note
Wittwer, a professor of soil science at Michigan State University, experimented extensively with radioisotopes in agricultural crops. He developed a chemical, known as Gibberellins, that increased the growth rate in plants and prompted his book Feeding a Billion (1987).

The Sylvan H. Wittwer photograph collection consists mainly of photos related to his work with plants and growth rates. Included also is extensive travel, mainly in CHina and the Soviet Union.
