Historical Note
Alan Engen (b. 1940), the son of Alf Engen, began skiing at the age of two. He attended the University of Utah, where he was a member of the ski team from 1958 to 1962. He graduated with B.A. and B.F.A. degrees in Art History in 1963. In a lifetime of competitive skiing, he has won countless championships. Engen is currently the director of skiing at Alta and chairman/president of the Alf Engen Ski Museum.
Alf Engen (1909-1997) was a Norwegian-American skier, ski instructor and owner. His two younger brothers, Sverre (1911-2001) and Corey (1916-2006), were also both accomplished skiers, and their combined contributions to the development and popularity of skiing in the Western United States were significant.
Engen was born in Mjondallen, Norway, the oldest of three boys. As a son of the famous skier Trond Engen he was reared in skiing from a young age. In 1929,at age twenty, Engen immigrated to the United States with his younger brother, Sverre. They settled in Chicago, where the two brothers joined the American-Norwegian Athletic Club to meet fellow Norwegians. In 1931, he settled permanently in Salt Lake City. His youngest brother, Kaare, and their mother, Martha, immigrated to the United States in 1933 and the three Engen brothers traveled the United States as professional jumpers, breaking Nordic records and gaining recognition wherever they went.
Engen began his professional career by capturing the National Jumping Champion title eight times between the years of 1931 and 1946. Furthermore, at the age of 37 and on borrowed skis, he won the 1946 National Jumping title by leaping 259 feet. He was also the National Classic Champion (cross country and jumping combined) twice during these years in 1939 and 1941. After learning how to downhill ski at the age of 30, Engen became national downhill and slalom champion in 1947. Engen was also the recipient of numerous awards including the All-American Ski Trophy, 1937, Americanism Award in 1940, Helm's Hall of Fame Award in 1954; and Skier's Hall of Fame Award in 1956. He is credited for developing the technique of powder skiing, honed at the Alta Ski Area.
He established the Alf Engen Ski School at Alta, Utah, and became director of the Deseret News and Telegram Free Ski School. In 1948, Engen and Walter Prager were co-coaches for the United States Olympic ski team. He assisted in the creation of over 30 various ski resorts in the Western United States, in a lifetime dedicated to the development of the industry.
Alf Engen died in 1997, at the age of 88. His two younger brothers both lived to the age of 90.

Description: Skiing Volumes I and II
VHScolor, soundThe American Teaching System: Alpine Skiing Video, Volume I, Produced by the Professional Ski Instructors of America, provides a powerful visual introduction to the American Teaching System - PSIA's cornerstone educational program. The "Alpine Skiing" videos, volumes I and II, are designed to accompany PSIA's second edition of the American Teaching System: Alpine Skiing manual. Volume II features the PSIA Demonstration Team teaching experienced skiers (levels 7 through 9) how to achieve high-end, high-energy skiing in the bumps, on steep terrain, in crud, and in powder. The emphasis is on evaluating a student's performance level and then tailoring the ski lesson accordingly. The "Alpine Skiing" videos are must-have reference tools for ski instructors and excellent resources for other ski instructors who wish to broaden their teaching repertoire.

Description: Silver and Snow: The Park City Story
VHScolor, soundPark City, Utah, is known world wide as a first-class winter sports resort and host city of many of the competition venues of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. But Park City's First taste of fame was as one of the biggest, liveliest mining boom towns of the Western frontier. Its pioneers, miners, bootleggers, and the Olympics came to town. This film by award-winning Utah filmmakers Larry Warren and Ken Fall tells, for the first time, the tale of a mining town that nearly became a ghost town, and then reinvented itself as a top international vacation destination. Producer/Writer/Director: Larry Warren. Photographer/Supervising Producer: Kenneth G. Fall. Video editor: Carol Dalrymple. Produced for the Park City Historical Society and museum in cooperation with KUED Television, Salt Lake City.

Description: New England Ski Museum Slalom
VHSblack and white, sound"One of the great pre-war mountain epics of Dr. Arnold Fanck and cinematographer Richard Angst. These Mountain Films are renowned for their sharp photography and splendid action choreography on the slopes. This production traces the antics of two zany Austrian carpenters (one of whom is the legendary ski champion, Guzzi Lantschner) as they move into the high society swirl that was associated with skiing in Europe in the mid-thirties. Set in Switzerland, the action catches the pair ski-jorring behind a train, diving down the bobsled flume, and jumping off everything in sight to avoid the hapless gendarme. The musical score is an original orchestration by Paul Dessau. With English subtitles, since this is a German comedy set in Switzerland. This is a collector's item that features vintage scenes of a way of life long disappeared from this alpine region, as well as belly laughs that make it fun for the entire family to watch. Black and White."

Description: The Alta Gelande Tournaments
DVDcolor, sound"Watch three films of gelande jumping. The first film clip, by Sverre Engen, was taken on the lower Rustler hillside mine dump in April 1963. This was Alta's first gelande tournament event. Alan Engen won this event with second place taken by Jim Gaddis. This particular film clip is followed by a piece narrated by Lowell Thomas on the gelande held on the larger mine dump base of the Collins Lift at Alta. The second film clip, again filmed by Sverre Engen, shows some of the very first inverted aerial manuvers in competition done on the mine dump near the base of the Alta Collisd lift in the early 1970's. These acrobatic jumps were the precursor to the freestyle jumping that has become a popular Olympic event in the later years. Bob Theobald, famous former freestyle legend, performs his famous inverted maneuver in this film clip. The final piece is the ABC's Wide World of Sports TV broadcast of the National Gelande Championship held at Alta in 1969. Some of the top gelande competitors featured include Pepi Stiegler, Bob Stingley, Junior Bounous, Dan Thurston, and Jim Gaddis. Bob Beattie, former coach of the U.S. Ski Team, is the Wide World of Sports commentator."
