Hack Miller papers, 1937-1996

Harold "Hack" Guest Miller (1915-1998), better known in the newpaper and sports world as Hack Miller, was born in Salt Lake City Utah to Austin Porter Miller, and Mary Jane Guest Miller. He began writing for the Deseret News in 1934, and continued his column there until 1978. Hack earned his Doctorate in Jurisprudence at the University of Utah, and served in World War II as a buck private. After his return from the European front, he rejoined the Deseret News as Managing Editor, eventually becoming their Sports Editor as well as a feature writer. He was the first reporter to to feature a live sports spot in Utah on KSL, and later on KTVX. He extended his television work to the A.M. series in California, where he leatured on various countries he visited, including Russia, Siberia, Vietnam, and Morocco (where he played golf with King Hussein.) Hack Miller covered six Olympic Games, and was on the Utah Symphony;s 15-nation Latin American Trip. He was the first news reporter to interview President Nixon after Nixon's resignation. In addition, he covered the World Series, and many NFL games as well as golf tournaments. He retired from the Deseret News in 1978, and served an LDS mission in New York City with his wife of many years, Barbara Cannon.
