- History 469 was developed in 2000-2001 and taught by Dr. David Stratton in spring of 2001 at WSU. Designed for 15 students, the class focused on client-oriented research projects in public history. The collection includes lecture notes, source materials, and final drafts and the finished publications of the histories and student papers for both The College of Liberal Arts and Thompson Hall.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
Washington State University's College of Liberal Arts has been a part of the institution from the school's 1890 beginning to present day. WSU's Albert W. Thompson Hall (originally known as the Administration building, and then later as the Foreign Languages Building or colloquially as the Old Admin Building, until being officially named Thompson Hall in 1972) is the oldest extant building on campus, completed in 1894. When administrative functions moved elsewhere on campus in 1969, it began housing the College of Liberal Arts (the Sciences and Arts), the Foreign Language department, and classrooms.
This class was developed in 2000-2001 and taught by Dr. David Stratton in spring of 2001. Designed for 15 students, the class focused on client-oriented research projects in public history. The students were divided into two groups, one group working on the history of Thompson Hall while the other group worked on the history of WSU's College of Liberal Arts. The seminar was designed to give history seniors a class to practice their research techniques and critical thinking skills but also an introduction into the area of public history; each student produced their own research paper on one facet of their area, and one overall paper in each area was created.

The collection is organized by subject into a number of informal series. Folders one and two comprise materials related to the rededication of Thompson Hall and Dr. David Stratton’s notes on a lecture given at the rededication. Folders three to eight include information on the formation of the class History 469, a senior seminar class; source materials for the College of Liberal arts, Thompson Hall, Washington state, and Washington State University. Included in this source material are photocopies of published articles. Folders nine and ten include final drafts and the finished publications of the histories and student papers for both The College of Liberal Arts and Thompson Hall.

Acquisition Information
The papers of Dr. David Stratton and the students of his History 469 course were given to the Washington State University libraries on February 7th, 2003 (UA2003-03). One item from the College of Liberal Arts Papers From the Rededication of Thompson Hall (UA2000-24), the Dean's speech, was incorporated into the first folder of this collection at processing, and the remainder of UA2000-24 was duplicated in this collection and thus discarded.
