Historical Note

The Clarkston Heights Telephone Association was chartered on 29 December 1917 by a group of rural residents who desired a local telephone system. The association functioned for over fifty years on assessments from members. In January 1969, amid discovery that the telephone system was in great disrepair, members voted to dissolve the association and join the Pacific Northwest Bell company. By January 1970, a committee of former members completed the association's dissolution by dividing residual cash among the members-at-large.

Content Description

The Clarkston Heights Telephone Association records include several types of documents. These include the original copy of its constitution, signed by the charter members, and its by-laws. A minute book chronicles annual meetings of the membership from 1917 to 1970. Much of the remainder of the collection includes treasurer's files from 1953 to 1966. These include canceled checks and monthly bank statements, paperwork required by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries, and account receipts from various vendors. Almost all of the records were kept by Emmett Johnson, a charter member of the association and its secretary-treasurer from 1918 to 1970.
