Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Joel Magalnick grew up in Denver where he participated in numerous Jewish activities such as B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO). After majoring in journalism at the University of Colorado, he had a variety of jobs in several cities including Boston and Chicago before moving to Seattle. In 2002, he began as Interim Editor of the Jewish Transcript and in 2003 was appointed Editor. In 2012 his title changed to Editor and Publisher.

In this interview, Joel Magalnick explained what it's like to be the editor and publisher of JT News and described the evolution of the paper from its inception in 1924 as the Jewish Transcript to its later identy as the JTNews, including the names of the editors and how the paper altered over the years. He discussed the coming change of the paper into The Jewish Sound, to be published in a magazine format. With his overall view of the local Jewish organizations, he gave his perspective of how the community has changed during the 14 years he's been in Seattle. Joel covered his participation in the American Jewish Press Association, described local Jewish organizations with which he's been involved, mentioned a novel he completed in 2004, and spoke about the future.
