This collection includes the records from the University of Idaho Athena organization spanning from 1987 to 2014. These include member lists, meeting minute notes, bylaws, newsletters, documents from the Women's Leadership Conferences and Women in Higher Education Roundtable events, correspondence, treasurer's reports, and research conducted by Athena.

Historical Note

Dr. Joan M. West, a professor in Foreign Languages, founded the University of Idaho Athena organization in 1987, after five University of Idaho female faculty members went to the National Endowment for the Humanities conference in 1986. These women were able to get together and discuss the issues female professionals experienced in the work place. They continued to meet together informally and discuss these issues, inviting other women join They turned it into a formal organization on campus called Athena.

The organization promotes an inclusive and equitable climate for women, women's leadership and networking and seeks to improve the campus climate for the female professionals at the University of Idaho. They also provide professional women at the University of Idaho with an opportunity to become acquainted with each other, to raise mutual interests and concerns, to further the growth and effectiveness of university women through professional programs, and to support the educational effort of women through stipends and/or scholarships.

Throughout Athena's existence, their aim has been to support professional women. They have since awarded a scholarship called the Athena Opportunity Scholarship, and established the Women of the Year (WOTY) Award in 2002. Other events include the Women's Leadership Conference and support programs of interest to other women on campus

Content Description

This collection includes the records from the University of Idaho Athena organization spanning from 1987 to 2014. These include member lists, meeting minute notes, bylaws, newsletters, documents from the Women's Leadership Conferences and Women in Higher Education Roundtable events, correspondence, treasurer's reports, and research conducted by Athena. The four versions of the bylaws in the collection were amended 1987, 1988, 1998, and 2007. Documents from events organized and attended by Athena members such as the Women's Leadership Conference , the Women in Higher Education Roundtable (WHER) , and other workshops. The research conducted by Athena concerns campus climate and pay equity at the University of Idaho.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

Materials in this collection were arranged based on different functions of documents used by Athena. Where possible the material was sorted in chronological order within the folders. Folders were sorted alphabetically by title. Materials under the subseries of Women in Higher Education Roundtable and the Women's Leadership Conference, the order and original folder titles were preserved.

Acquisition Information

Materials recieved from the Universtiy of Idaho Athena organization in 1995 (MA 1995-05), 2008 (UA 2008-015), and 2014 (MA 2014-23, MA 2014-24, MA 2014-34, MA 2014-39, MA 2014-40) and 2018 (MA 2018-39).
