Historical Note
Jack Clinton, D.M.D. was born in Lakeview, Oregon to working-class parents who encouraged their children to attend university. He attended the University of Oregon as an undergraduate, finishing his degree as a first-year student in the School of Dentistry. He graduated from University of Oregon School of Dentistry (OHSU) in 1964, and was hired on as full-time faculty at the school in 1968. He was voted Outstanding Clinical Instructor in 1974, 1976, and 1978. He served as chair of the Alumni Association from 1979 to 1980. In his time at OHSU, Dr. Clinton served on the Curriculum Committee, the Admissions Committee, and the Rank and Tenure Committee. He held positions as Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and Dean of the School of Dentistry (from 2004 to 2012). He served as Director of the Dental Careers Institute, on the Oregon Board of Dentistry, and as consultant for the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation. Dr. Clinton was an early practitioner and educator on Four-Handed Dentistry (or, Dental Auxiliary Utilization) and spent much of his career building on that model. Dr. Clinton passed away in January of 2022.
Content Description
The Jack Clinton papers consist of records created during Dr. Clinton's career at OHSU School of Dentistry. The collection is arranged alphabetically and represents the years from 1961 to 2004. The collection consists of materials relating to the School of Dentistry, including policies and manuals, pamphlets, memoranda, faculty rosters and phone lists, and educational resources. The materials in the collection primarily represent the years 1994 to 2004, but there are certificates, licenses, awards, and receipts from Dr. Clinton's early days at OHSU, from 1968 to 1988. There are also patient teaching aids from as early as 1961. Particularly interesting are the slides and accompanying VHS recording of one of Dr. Clinton's lectures on Four-Handed Dentistry and Infection Control (1994). In addition, a VHS recording of the 1990 memorial service for Dr. Kenneth R. Cantwell, D.M.D., a mentor to Dr. Clinton at OHSU, is included. The collection may be of interest to individuals researching the standardization of dental practice and the history of dental education.
