Historical Note

Reed W. Fautin was a professor of zoology at the University of Wyoming from 1946-1973. He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and his Masters and PhD from the University of Illinois. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. While stationed at Canton Island, he studied the birds and sea shells of the area. In the summer of 1946 he began teaching at the University of Wyoming Science Camp, located in the Snowy Range, until retirement in 1973. From February 1958 until December 1959, he was in Kabul, Afghanistan, as part of the Wyoming Team. Fautin died in 1983 and in 2006 he was recognized by the University of Wyoming, College of Arts and Sciences as an Outstanding Former Faculty.

Collection contains photographs and glass slides of Canton Island birds; memorabilia from Fautin’s time in the army during WWII; biographical information; research files and data regarding small mammals, climate, and forests in Utah, Snowy Range, and Black Thunder Basin; and photographs, slides, reports, correspondence, and home movies from his time in Kabul, Afghanistan as part of the Wyoming Team.
