In 1985 Shiba Sukeyasu, who served as a musician at the Department of Music of the Imperial Household Agency and is a specialist in the Japanese classic flute, took over as music director and gathered graduates from colleges of music and active musicians to organize a group called Reigakusha. It has earned a good reputation for its gracious performances, including its traditional gagaku repertoire, revival of pieces that were no longer being performed, reproduction of gagaku instruments that had been preserved in Shosoin Storehouse and its performance of the works of contemporary traditional music by Takemitsu Toru and other composers.
