Biographical NoteReturn to Top

M'Baby Kouyate (1934-2016) was a musician and griot from Kaabu (modern-day Guinea-Bissau). His kora playing was famous for its innovative solos and use of the minor scale. He often performed with his wife Diaryatou. His legacy is cared for by his son Sekou, who brings a modern touch to his music. In 2003, he launched the International Festival M'bady Kouyate to encourage the expression of ancestral tradition on different instruments.
