Biographical NoteReturn to Top
John Sherman was born in Toronto, Canada on May 3, 1916 and was enrolled at Flint Junior College in Michigan between 1933 and 1934. He later transferred to the University of Michigan and received his bachelor of arts degree in geography in 1937. He earned his M.A. degree from Clark University at Worcester, Massachusetts in 1944 and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1947. After completing his doctoral dissertation he was appointed as Assistant Professor, promoted to Associate Professor in 1954, and to Full Professor in 1963. Between 1963 and 1973 he served as the departmental chairman. Professor Sherman was the founder of the modern cartography program at the university, the first full time cartographer at any American university, for over three decades one of the leading cartographers in the country. One of his specialties was in producing tactile maps for blind. He retired from the Department of Geography in 1986. John Sherman died on October 21, 1996.
