Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Eric Sorensen was employed as a WSU science writer in one format or another from November 2009 to his June 2019 retirement. For his first five or so years at WSU he wrote for Washington State Magazine and the University news service. The second half of his tenure was almost entirely devoted to writing science news stories, primarily to generate media interest.

He first came to Pullman in 1989 as the Spokesman-Review Palouse bureau chief, leaving in 1998 to be a science writer for The Seattle Times, and then returning in 2009 to work for WSU.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

395 audio interviews created primarily during Eric Sorensen’s work as a writer and science writer for various WSU news and promotional departments. With very few exceptions, the interviews are all with WSU faculty, staff, or students. A few of the interviews were conducted by Sorensen’s predecessor, Tim Steury. The majority of the interviews were intended either for use in the WSU alumni magazine, Washington State Magazine, or for use as press releases or short articles intended to raise awareness of WSU’s research.

Sorensen conducted all these interviews while employed at WSU. Subjects were made aware that they were being recorded. While he did not use permission forms, he did get their verbal consent. In cases where they spoke “off the record,” he stopped or paused the recording.

Files range in length from nine seconds to two hours and 36 minutes; the median file is about 35 minutes in length.

Administrative InformationReturn to Top

Arrangement

The 395 audio files (1 3ga, 3 amr, 284 dss, 41 m4a, 48 mp3, 19 wma) and their access and archival copies have been renamed by the interviewee’s names. Where Eric Sorensen had additional information in the filename, that information has been retained.

The majority of the files have the interview dates noted below, as taken from the digital files. Just under one hundred of them were recorded using a device which did not have the date programmed; as those appear to all be between 2014 and 2016, we simply left that range as their date.

One additional file, original file structure.txt, has been created and added to the materials; as that name implies, that documents the original file and folder structure. Two pieces of software necessary for accessing the original dss files, DSSJobNo.Dat and DssPlay.zip, have also been retained in the collection.

Location of Collection

All materials are digital only, and are retained in WSU MASC’s digital archives. There is no physical component to this collection.

Acquisition Information

The materials were transferred on flash drive to the Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) by Eric Sorensen of WSU News on May 28, 2019. They were retained as MS2019-09, and processed by University Archivist Mark O’English in October of 2019.

Processing Note

The files were copied to MASC’s archival digital storage, and the original flash drive they came on was returned to the donor at their request. 1 docx, 3 pdfs, 29 jpegs, and an html file were all deleted during accessioning, as were 160 mp3s from a commercial language instruction program. This left 505 interviews. Using automated software, wav and mp3 files were created for each file where either did not exist, and housed next to them in the original file structure. Files created at this time can be identified both by date of creation (May 2019 and after) and by their naming suffixes (-access.mp3 and –normalized.wav).

The original digital files were a combination of individual files and folders (sets) of individual files. Where possible, files were renamed to begin with the first and last name of the interviewees while also retaining whatever subject information was in the file name, and files were removed from folders to the top level (and those now-empty folders were deleted). Duplicate copies of files were deleted at this time, dropping us from 505 interviews to 395.

Related Materials

As the majority of the interviews found here were recorded as part of research either for Washington State Magazine articles or for WSU news releases, in many cases those articles can be found through the Washington State University website.
