Historical Note

Washington State University’s Office of Multicultural Student Services can trace back to the formation of a Chicano/Latino Center and a Native American Student Center in 1971. An African American Student Center (the Heritage House) and an Asian Pacific American Student Center would follow. In 1986, the four were pulled together under the new Division of Minority Affairs. In 1992 that became the Division of Multicultural Student Services, and “Division” was changed to “Office” in 1995.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is organized both by type of material and originating office, and then by date or subject within those. First in the collection is records and papers from Multicultural Student Services and some of their subsidiary groups, organized by subject. Following that is one series of records and papers from the African American Student Center, again organized by subject. After those are two sets of media and photographs, the first from MSS in general, and the second from the Chicana/o Latina/o Student Center. Within each of those sets, media precedes photographs, and then within both media and photographs items are in chronological order.

Acquisition Information

This collection was received at Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) from Multicultural Student Services in two accessions, one from Steve Nakata on November 1, 2010, retained as UA2010-13; the other from Amy Poirier on November 10, 2016, retained as UA2016-13.

Processing Note

The collection was processed in December, 2016 by University Archivist Mark O’English. The two collections were combined in a new subject based order and rehoused during processing. Three oversized photographs were scanned at high-quality and archived, reprinted at 8.5”x11” and filed, and the oversized originals were then discarded.

A few newsletters and other small items were moved to MASC’s WSU Publications sets, under WSU 228.
