- Robert O. Lee (1921-2002) was the leader of scientific expeditions to Mexico and South America. Collection includes correspondence, diaries, reports, articles, transparencies, maps and supply lists from three American Quintana Roo Expeditions in Mexico, 1965-1968, Vinson Massif Expedition in Antarctica, 1964-1965, and Rio Mezquital Expedition in Mexico, 1970.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Robert Ormond Lee was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1921. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. In 1956, he began working at the Georgia-Pacific Corporation. During the 1960s, he participated in twenty international exploratory expeditions, including the American Talung Himalayan Expedition, the Argentine International Aconcagua Expedition, the American Quintana Roo Expeditions, and the C.E.D.A.M. Mesquital Expedition. He climbed more than 250 mountains, and was a member of the National Ski Patrol and the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment. He was a painter and printmaker, and served on the board of the Portland Art Association, which later became the Portland Art Museum. He married three times and had two children. Lee died in 2002.
