- Media Services was created in 1976 and included KUED, KUER, Instructional Television, Educational Media, and Correspondence Study. Rex L. Campbell served as Director of Radio and Television Services from 1964 to 1975. Robert M. Reed was General Manager of KUED from 1977 to 1978. Bruce L. Christensen became General Manager of KUED in 1979 and Director of Media Services in 1981. This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, and subject files primarily from KUED and secondarily from other divisions of Media Services.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
KUED Television, Channel 7, went on the air in January, 1958. KUER-FM Radio began as a student-operated station in 1959. Both were originally part of the President's Office. In 1962 Radio and Television services was organized under the supervision of the Dean of Continuing Education to oversee broadcasting activities.
In 1976 a new organization, Media Services, was formed which included KUED, KUER, Instructional Television, Educational Media (which included "micro-teaching"), and Correspondence Study (later renamed Center for Independent Study and Development). The purpose of the new organization was to consolidate all University media activities into one organization to provide media service to the University and public at large. Media Services is now part of the office of the Vice President for University Relations.
Keith M. Enger was appointed the first Director of Radio and Television Services in 1962. In 1964 Rex L. Campbell became director and remained in the position until 1975. Dennis Peterson was appointed the first Director of Media Services in 1976, along with Robert M. Reed as General Manager of KUED, and Donald Smith as General Manager of KUER. Oscar John Vetterli was Director of Instructional Television, Stephen Hess was Director of Educational Media, and Dale Montgomery was Director of the Center for Independent Study and Development. Milton Davis was Associate Director of Media Services and Coordinator of Radio and Television Translators.
Milton Davis was named Acting General Manager of KUED in 1978 with Bruce L. Christensen becoming General Manager in 1979. In 1980 Christensen became Director of Media Services and Fred C. Esplin became General Manager of KUED. Donal Smith remained General Manager of KUER through 1985. In 1982 Milton Davis became Director of Media Services. He was succeeded in 1985 by Stephen Hess.
Currently (1993-1994), Stephen Hess is Executive Director of Media Services, Fred C. Esplin is General Manager of KUED, John P. Greene is General Manager of KUER, James R. Baird is Director of Instructional Media Services, and Helen Lacy is General Manager of instructional television station KULC-TV (Channel 9).

Over one-half of this collection (3.5 linear ft.) consists of operational records of KUED. These are primarily memoranda, meeting minutes, files concerning Federal Communications Commission licensing and reports, and grant applications to what was then the federal department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Approximately 1.5 linear ft. consists of records of other divisions of Media Services: KUER, Educational Media, and Instructional Television.
An important part of this collection consists of materials related to the development of national and state telecommunications policy, principally correspondence of Bruce L. Christensen concerning the Public Broadcasting System, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Pacific Mountain Network. Also included are meeting minutes of the Utah Joint Committee on Educational Television (1964-1972).

Arrangement
The collection was organized in two series: 1. University media; 2. National and state telecommunications policy. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically thereunder within each series.
Processing Note
This collection is composed of eight separate records center accessions which contained a multiplicity of filing systems. Although folder titles were maintained, the order of folders was changed to create a single collection. Because Bruce Christensen's correspondence deals exclusively with national and state issues, it was moved from KUED and joined with other records of similar subject matter.
