Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Dunsmuir, California, in 1900, Charles Burton Winne spent some of his high school years in Ashland, Oregon, where he excelled in track and football. Prior to entering Oregon Agricultural College in 1920, Winne served in the U.S. Army and received basic training at Fort Stevens, Oregon, before heading to Europe. After graduating in 1924 with a degree in engineering, Winne and his wife Molly settled in Seattle and raised a son, Wilson Earl Winne. Working with the Southern Pacific Railroad, Winne retired early to Orcas Island where he and Molly managed an estate. They eventually moved to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island where they lived for the rest of their lives. Winne died in 1980.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Charles Burton Winne Scrapbooks are comprised of two scrapbooks assembled by alumnus Charles Burton "Burt" Winne that document his experience at Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) and service in the Army during War World I. Primarily made up of photographs, these scrapbooks also contain dance cards, invitations, ribbons, student handbooks, foreign currency, a letter, and ticket stubs.

The materials documenting Winne's Oregon Agricultural College years reflect his involvement in the Kappa Theta Rho Fraternity, picnics with other students, football games, and campus views. Among the photographs, there are also group shots of Winne with other OAC alumni at class reunions.

The material relating to World War I are entirely made up of photographs. These are a combination of mass produced views by H.R. Schroyer and images taken by Winne during his military training and while stationed overseas in Europe. Numbered and identified by subject in a booklet attached to one of the scrapbooks, the Schroyer images depict wartime scenes in France and Germany as well as scenes of the troops returning home to celebratory events in Seattle, Portland, and other places.

Other photographs in the scrapbooks include portrait shots of Winne's parents and his wife Molly as well as shots of Winne in high school.

Items that were found detached and loose inside the scrapbooks have been placed into a file folder that is stored with the scrapbooks.
