Historical Note

The Little School of Seattle was founded by Dr. Eleanor Siegl in 1959 to teach children through progressive education ideals which aim to treat students as individuals who are involved in their own learning process. Values emphasized in the school mirror progressive views, such as multi-cultural awareness, and Eleanor wanted to take children away from desks and respect their personal ways of learning at their own pace. The institution began as a preschool of the University Unitarian Church in Seattle, and grew in 1964 to include elementary students. In 1968 a donor provided a 10-acre site in Bellevue as the school outgrew its past accommodation. Today, the school still follows progressive education ideals such as ‘forest kindergarten’ where students are taught outside and encouraged to play in a natural environment. The Little School is open to the latest educational trends to help student develop necessary skills via project-based learning and eschewing the traditional test format.
