Biographical Note
Dr. Clifford Merrill Drury was born on November 7, 1897 in Clinton, Iowa to William Drury and Charity Mae Dell. He was trained as a pastor and served in Moscow, Idaho from 1928 to 1938, during which time he officiated the marriage of Arthur Wilfred Welch and Verna C. Robinson. Later in life, Drury wrote several books about various people involved in the settling of the Walla Walla Valley, including Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and H. T. Cowley. During his press tours through Walla Walla, he was a guest in the home of Alfred and Verna. He began corresponding with them in 1971 and continued until his death on April 17, 1984. At this time, a correspondence began between the Welches and Joyce and Dean Drury regarding the management of Dr. Drury's estate.

The A. Wilfred and Verna Welch Letters from Clifford M. Drury houses letters from Dr. Clifford M. Drury, and later Joyce and Dean Drury, to Arthur Wilfred and Verna Welch of Walla Walla. This collection, which dates from 1971 to 1987, consists of letters and newspaper clippings, evidencing the process of publication of the last several of Dr. Drury's books, including Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and the Opening of Old Oregon. This collection is a timeline of publication and research for Drury's books, but also of his several press visits to Walla Walla and surrounding areas.
