Historical NoteReturn to Top

Richard T. Lewis, a commercial photographer, would annually photograph the Junior Livestock Show held at Union Square in Spokane. In this group are photographs of the shows held between 1948 and 1961. From the notes and order forms it seems that Lewis photographed the different livestock winners on speculation. He also sold some prints to the Spokane newspapers.

Lewis also photographed logging and lumbering in the Avery and Wallace, Idaho area. He photographed forest fire fighting by the C.C.C. between 1937 and 1939 in the Spokane and Priest Lake areas.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The photographs and negatives of the Junior Livestock Shows are arranged in chronological order beginning in 1948 and ending in 1961. Since the negatives outnumber the prints three to one each year begins with the negatives and ends with the prints. With only a few exceptions, the negatives have been described by Lewis and indicate the livestock classification. The negatives are 4x5 and 5x7, the prints are 8x10 and smaller. The Junior Livestock Show material fills the first 33 of the 37 folders in this collection.

There are only negatives in the single forest fire folder and the two logging folders. The forest fire folder is #34 and the logging folders are #35 and #36. The last folder contains newspaper clippings and order forms and notes.
