Historical Note

Marcus L. Hewett was born in Maine in 1862. He moved to Montana around 1891 and began investing in mining properties in the Basin area. He was one of the founders and general manager of the Cataract Copper Mining Company from 1901 to 1904; vice president of the Boston and Alta Copper Company in 1909; publisher of The Basin Progress; founder of the Hewett State Bank of Basin; and served in the fifth, ninth, and eleventh Montana legislatures. He died August 23, 1926, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The Cataract Copper Mining Company was incorporated in 1901 by Marcus L. Hewett of Basin, T.J. Walsh of Helena, and Oscar Nelson of Pierre, South Dakota. C.C. Darrow served as cashier of the company and the mines were managed successively by J.A. Heany, A.G. VanEmen, and Walter S. Perkins. The company acquired the Grey Eagle, High Ore, Rumley, Crystal, St. Lawrence, Comet, and Bullion claims, located in the Cataract Creek area. In 1904, the firm built a smelter at Bullion. Although the smelter ran efficiently, the Company was unable to show a profit due to the extreme costs of getting coke and other necessary supplies to the smelter and mines.

The Boston and Alta Copper Company was incorporated in July 1909, with Marcus L. Hewett as one of its directors. It operated mines in the Corbin Mining District.

The Hewett State Bank was incorporated in February 1906 by Marcus L. Hewett, Louis Sponheim, and Charles N. Kessler. Lynn D. Kent was cashier.
