Historical Note

The Idaho Conservation League (ICL) was formed in 1973 by a group of concerned Idaho citizens who desired an effective information and coordinating center and a citizens’ lobby on conservation and public interest issues. In a little over three years, ICL established itself as one of the most influential non-partisan citizens groups in the Rocky Mountain region. ICL communicates information to their members and the general public through their monthly Newsletter, a statewide telephone network, legislative “alerts”, and periodic press releases. ICL staff travel extensively around the state, meeting with League members and others and conducting informational programs. The staff researches issues, organizes citizens, and maintains lines of public input into decision-making processes. ICL also has an active volunteer base that observes and reports on legislative activity during the session, prepares and sends the Newsletter, and aids in fund raising. The Idaho Conservation Leagues’ members have worked on a myriad of issues and projects and have had many important victories in their efforts to protect and preserve Idaho.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This collection was minimally processed with the original order retained within each of the boxes but the arrangement of the boxes within an accession was changed to conform to series or subseries. The first series is made up of the Idaho Conservation League’s general administrative files with two subseries separating the materials into their history/membership files and Board of Directors files. The second series deals with the broader issues relating to the state of Idaho with those files divided further down into two subseries of materials that are the issues themselves and the legislative and legal actions taken. The third series is comprised of materials that were specific to the northern Idaho region and contains two subseries, one on the issues relating to northern Idaho and the other are the papers collected by Gerald Snyder, an officer with the Idaho Conservation League who was involved primarily with the northern Idaho region. The fourth series is focused on the southern Idaho region and is divided into four subseries. The first subseries in the fourth series are the issues related to the southern Idaho region, and the second (Bruce Boccard), third (Mike Medberry), and fourth (Rick Johnson) subseries are the personal papers collected by officers of ICL who were involved primarily with the southern Idaho region. The fifth series is a collection of newspaper clippings that have been alphabetized by topic that either was related to an environmental issue or about ICL.
