Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Shigeo Kishibe (1912-2005) was an ethnomusicologist, musician, and researcher from Tokyo, Japan. He made his first stage appearance at age 9 and his first radio appearance at age 14. He earned a graduate degree from Tokyo Imperial University in 1936 with a thesis on modal systems of popular music during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. He taught Asian and Japanese music history at a high school in the 1940s and then went on to become a professor at the University of Tokyo. During his lifetime he has taught and lectured at various universities in Japan and around the world including Teikyo University, Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. He also released a book on the topic of musical institutions in the Tang Dynasty.
