Biographical Note
The Norwegian Roald Engelbregt Grauning Amundsen (July 16, 1872 - June 18, 1928) explored the Arctic ice cap and Antarctica and led the expedition that first reached the South Pole. He left medical school in 1897 to go to the Antarctic with a Belgian expedition, the first group to spend a winter there. Between 1903 and 1906 he passed from east to west across the Arctic Ocean above North America, the so-called Northwest Passage. He was mounting an expedition to the North Pole when he learned that an American, Robert Peary, had already reached the pole (1909).
Content Description
The collection includes photographs that probably precede his attempt at the North Pole. Some of the photographs were taken by Lomen and by John Thwaites.
