Biographical NoteReturn to Top
John N. Lein was born on October 25, 1926 in Spokane, Washington. He earned his B.S. degree from the University of Idaho in 1950 and a M.D. degree from the University of Washington in 1955. Lein performed his residency and an internship at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis between 1955 and 1960. He joined the University of Washington Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty in 1964. In addition to his responsiblities as a professor, Lein served as the director of Continuing Medical Education and associate dean of Medicine from 1964 to 1984, vice president for Health Sciences from 1984 to 1992, and director of Federal Relations from 1992 until his retirement at the end of 1996. He also served on various national and state medical and health committees and boards, as well as speaking on behalf of the University at numerous events.

Notebooks contain biographical information, correspondence, clippings, newsletters, photographs, awards, and speeches documenting the career of John "Jack" Lein, while serving as professor and administrator at the University of Washington. The "Files" series contains reports, speeches, publications, publicity materials, newsletters, photographs, and negatives, in addition to cross references to related materials in the accession. There is significant documentation of the WAMI program, a four-state regional medical education network called the WAMI Program, an acronym for the participating states of Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, created in order to address problems associated with rural health care.

WAMI In 1971, the UW pioneered a new approach to solving the complex
problems of rural health care, under the leadership Robert L. Van Citters, then
Dean of the School of Medicine, and with the support of UW President Charles
Odegaard and Washington State Governor Daniel J. Evans. This experiment created
a four-state regional medical education network called the WAMI Program, an
acronym for the participating states of Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.
Medical students from each of the WAMI states stay in their home state
universities for the first year of basic studies. Then, they all move to the UW
for the second year of training. Finally, the students can spend much of their
third and fourth years as well as their residencies in clinical settings and
communities similar to those in which they hope to practice. The WAMI program
allows the UW School of Medicine to act as the medical school for nearly
one-quarter of the land mass of the U.S. It has been supported financially by
the participating states since its initial year, when it started with grants
from the Commonwealth Fund and some federal funding.
