Biographical Note
Harry Morgan Dengler was born on November 30, 1882 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1909, Dengler moved to Missoula, Montana and worked as a clerk at the Anaconda Copper Mining Company logging camp in nearby Potomac, Montana. He married Nellie Boyd in 1912 and began teaching at the Potomac High School. After taking a civil service exam, Dengler qualified to work as an investigator and collector for the Internal Revenue Service. When the United States entered World War I, he was drafted as a Captain into the U.S. Army. After the war, Dengler returned to Montana and continued to work for the IRS. During the Prohibition era, Dengler relocated to Washington, D.C. and developed techniques used to prevent the coastal landings of illicit liquor shipments. He became known to rum-runners on both coasts as a formidable foe and was recruited to lead a training school for new Prohibition agents. He later worked as an executive officer for the U.S. Treasury Department’s intelligence unit. Dengler retired in 1952 and died on November 17, 1969 in San Francisco.
