Historical Note
Wayne Samuel Brown was born on March 19, 1928 in Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1951, his M.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1953, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1960. Both Brown's M.S. and Ph.D. were also in the field of Mechanical Engineering. His teaching affiliation with the University of Utah spanned the years 1953-1988. He was also Acting Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford from 1957-1959. Two of Brown's main research interests were thermal stresses on teeth and rock mechanics. Brown founded several companies including Eaton-Kenway, Terra Tek, Inc., NPI, Utah Innovation Center, Tennessee Innovation Center, and the Utah Innovation Foundation. He was the prime mover in instituting the series of International Symposia on Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and, before his death, was scheduled to be co-chairman of the 1988 Third International Symposium in Australia.
