Biographical Note

Charles W. Clarke was born in Forestville, Connecticut, in 1848. He graduated from the Rochester Academy and the Eastman Commercial College of Rochester, New York, and had his business training in New York City. For twelve years he was with the Cincinnati furniture manufacturing firm of Clarke Brothers. In 1884 he came west and purchased a 3100 acre stock ranch between Spokane and Rockford. In 1889 he moved to Post Falls where he and his brother Robert had a real estate business. He owned about half the land in Post Falls, was secretary and treasurer of the Post Falls Water Company, chairman of the board of county commissioners, and president of the school board.

Content Description

The C.W. Clarke papers include letter books of the Clarke Brothers real estate firm, one of which also includes other correspondence of C.W. Clarke, a scrapbook of newspaper clippings dealing with land development in the Coeur d'Alene region, and legal documents such as deeds and abstracts of title. Included with these documents are several item related to the Post Falls Water Power Company. There are photographs of early Post Falls and several of the Spokane River and falls. Also included are two souvenir books from the Idaho Exhibit at the Columbian Exhibition of 1893.

The Charles W. Clarke papers were donated to the University of Idaho Library by his daughter Emma E. Clarke of Spokane in June 1952.
