Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Department of Geological Sciences and Geophysics Program merged in March 2001 to form the University of Washington, Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

The Department of Geological Sciences traces its origins to 1899 when the teaching of earth science began as an official unit within the College of Liberal Arts with the formalization of the Department of Geology and Mineralogy. It emphasized mineralogy, petrology, and mining geology, and developed as a service to the mining, engineering, and forestry programs. The department consisted of one faculty member with a curriculum that encompassed physical and economic geology, assaying, and mining engineering (although a School of Mining had been proposed as early as 1888 it was not established until 1901). Considered a "pure science," geology remained in the College of Liberal Arts, which was reorganized into the College of Arts and Sciences in 1910. In 1969 the department was renamed the Department of Geological Sciences.

The 1957-58 International Geophysical Year (when the first satellite orbited the earth) stimulated world-wide collaboration among disciplines and began the momentum at the UW to formalize the geophysical interdisciplinary ties already in existence on campus. From 1959-1963 interdisciplinary geophysics was governed by a committee of faculty from several disciplines and in late 1963 officially became the Geophysics Group, a graduate interdisciplinary program through the Graduate School. Ultimately, in 1969 the modern Geophysics Program was formalized within the College of Arts and Sciences and the first full-time chair was appointed in 1970.

In 2001, the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) was created through the merger of two UW departments: the Department of Geological Sciences and the Geophysics Program within the College of Arts and Sciences. ESS moved into the newly formed College of the Environment as one of the inaugural units at the beginning of the academic year 2009-2010.

Biographical/Historical Note: The felt reports were originally collected by the University of Washington's Geology Department for the 1946 and 1949 earthquakes. By 1965, the questionnaires were addressed to the University of Washington's Seismograph Station. The reports concerning the 1981 earthquake suggest that the Seismograph Station was incorporated into the larger University of Washington, Geophysics Program, which is also the entity credited with collecting the data for the two earthquakes in 1995 and 1996. The Dept. of Geological Sciences and Geophysics Program merged in March of 2001 to become UW. Dept. of Earth and Space Sciences.

Scope and Content: Questionnaire forms, letters, drawings, photographs; 1946-1996 (bulk 1946-1965).

Includes a donor-supplied index detailing the various record formats for each earthquake and a brief introduction to the historical context in which "felt reports" were the primary means of establishing earthquake intensity.

Felt reports document earthquakes that affected the state of Washington on June 23rd, 1946; April 13th, 1949; April 29th, 1965; Elk Lakes in 1981; Robinson Point on January 28th, 1995; and Duvall on May 2nd, 1996. Includes 195 photocopies and original post card questionnaire replies for the 1946 earthquake, as well as several hundred originals and photocopies of felt report questionnaire forms, letters, schematic drawings, and photographs regarding the 1949 and 1965 earthquakes. The final three earthquakes do not include photocopies of the report questionnaire forms and letters.

Scope and Content: Event seismograms, picks, maps, tectonic events catalogs, photographs, and station permits and maintenance records from the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network Southeast and Western Washington subnet.

Arrangement: Arranged in 2 series.
  • Series 1, PNSN Southeast Washington Subnet
  • Series 2, Western Washington Station Logs

Biographical/Historical Note: The Seismology Lab encompasses research via the PNSN (Pacific Northwest Seismic Network) as well as regional and global studies by a number of UW faculty, staff, and students. The PNSN operates a network of seismometers across all of Oregon and Washington to detect and characterize earthquakes and volcanic activity. Seismology Lab research focuses especially on subduction zone seismology, structure and tectonics, emphasizing the Cascadia region as well as global research. Active topics include great earthquakes, fault zone physics, seismic hazard mitigation, episodic tremor and slip, and volcano processes.
