Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Whitman Centennial celebration was held from August 13 to August 16, 1936. It was described by the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin newspaper as "an extravaganza highlighted by parades, speakers and festive activities all held in memory of Marcus and Narcissa Prentiss Whitman." The celebration was primarily organized by Whitman Centennial, Incorporated, a committee established in February 1935 to explore the possibility of a commemorative celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman's arrival to Waiilatpu, near modern day Walla Walla, Washington. The Centennial celebration observed the occasion through parades and performances, as well as historic reenactments.
