Joaquin Miller was born Cincinnatus Heine (or Hiner) Miller on September 8, 1837, near Liberty, Indiana. In 1852, his family moved to the Oregon Territory and he subsequently spent time in the California gold fields. Miller was nicknamed “Poet of the Sierras” after writing about the Sierra Nevada in his Songs of the Sierras (1871).
