Freshman-Sophomore Bowl Fight
Written on album page: FRESH-SOPH FIGHTS 1916 U of P. The Bowl Fight, an annual physical competition between the freshman and sophomore class, was held for fifty years, from the Civil War to World War I. Freshmen provided a man, called the bowl man and the sophomore class proveded a bowl. The objective for the freshmen was to break the bowl before the sophomores could place the bowl man in the bowl, and thus win the competition. However, should the sophomores place the bowl man in the bowl, they would be prclaiomed the winners. This often violent skirmish was abandoned when in 1916, freshman William Lifson was killed in the fight.

1 | 65b | "Kill the Sophs" Bowl Fight invitation
The Bowl Fight, an annual physical competition between the freshman and sophomore class, was held for fifty years, from the Civil War to World War I. Freshmen provided a man, called the bowl man and the sophomore class proveded a bowl. The objective for the freshmen was to break the bowl before the sophomores could place the bowl man in the bowl, and thus win the competition. However, should the sophomores place the bowl man in the bowl, they would be proclaiomed the winners. This often violent skirmish was abandoned when in 1916, freshman William Lifson was killed in the fight.
