High Ground archives (art periodical published in Moscow, ID; Ross Coates, editor). This collection consists of correspondence, artist information, including resumes, drafts, interview transcripts, and other materials that went into the making of High Ground magazines. The amount of material varies by year, with the material for the 1996 and 1997 editions being the most prevalent.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

High Ground magazine began as an art magazine featuring art of the Inland Northwest. This periodical was published once a year in Moscow, Idaho. The editor and co-founder, Ross Coates, was a professor at Washington State University beginning in 1976. As of 2018, Coates is a Professor Emeritus of drawing and sculpture at WSU. Much of the material in the collection is also from Marilyn Lysohir Coates, who has also served as a professor at WSU. High Ground magazine was published from 1995-1999.

Arrangement

The materials are arranged with the material for each annual publication gathered together. Folders 1, 14, and 18 are oversize and are housed in box 3. The audiocassettes are housed separately in boxes 4 and 5. Assorted ephemera are located in envelopes in box 3, arranged by year.

Acquisition Information

Ross Coates, editor of High Ground, donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries in 2004 (MS.2004.01).
