Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Rachel “Rae” Katherine Pritchard was born in Logansport, Indiana, in 1894. She attended Valparaiso University and taught school for a few years in Cass County, Indiana. In the early 1920s, she lived with her husband in a logging camp in rural Wyoming and wrote for a Riverton, Wyoming, newspaper. Returning to Indiana in 1924, she worked as society editor of the Gary Post-Tribune. In 1957, she moved to Olympia, Washington, where her son was living. From 1958 to 1965, Pritchard worked as housemother of the Highland Hall men’s dormitory at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University). Rocks in the Washer, a memoir of her time at Western, was published in 1966. Pritchard died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1974.

The Rae K. Pritchard Collection contains photographs of residents of Highland Hall dormitory at Western Washington State College from 1958 to 1965. There are seven photo albums and three folders of loose photographs. Also available is one folder of biographical information on Pritchard and a copy of her memoir, Rocks in the Washer.
