Historical Background
The UW Alumni Association (UWAA) was formed by a small group of graduates in 1889 in order to continue supporting the university as well as unite graduates. The group was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization during the presidency of R. Bronsdon "Curly" Harris, who held office from 1936 through 1964. Regular reunions were established during Harris's presidency as part of a larger effort to increase the membership and participation in the association. The "Golden W" fifty-year reunions were a part of that effort. Reunions included luncheons and parties held for classmates to reconnect. Thanks to Harris's efforts and extensive recruiting during the 1980s, the UWAA is one of the largest alumni associations in the country today.
