Biographical Note
Avard Tennyson Fairbanks was born in Provo, Utah on March 2, 1897. He earned his MFA from the University of Washington in 1929. He created more than one hundred works throughout his lifetime, including ten public sculptures in Washington state. His monuments in Washington state include the 91st Division Monument in Fort Lewis, Pioneer Mother at Esther Short Park in Vancouver, and a monument honoring Dr. Marcus Whitman in both Walla Walla and at the Capitol Building in Olympia. Fairbanks also taught sculpture at the Seattle Institute of Art in 1929.
