Historical NoteReturn to Top
Paul Hansen Reistrup (b. 1933) was an American manager and consultant in the railway industry. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1959, he began working for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as Assistant Division Engineer. From 1961 to 1963, he worked as General Yardmaster, Trainmaster, and Superintendent of Car Utilization and Distribution. In 1964, he became director of the passenger transport department for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and in 1966 became Assistant to the Vice President. The next year he moved to the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad where he was in charge of passenger operations. In 1975, Reistrup was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Amtrak where he initiated a modernization program for passenger cars. He left Amtrak due to budget cuts and policy disagreements in 1978 and joined the transportation consultants RL Banks and Associate as Vice President. In 1988, he returned to the railway sector and became president of Monongahela Railway, a coal-hauling short-line railroad in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. From 1992 to 1994, he was General Manager of the Railroad Development Corporation and subsequently vice president of Parsons Brinckerhoff, a multinational engineering and design firm. In 1997, he joined CSX Transportation as Vice President of Passenger Integration. Reistrup resigned from CSX in 2002 and began work as a consultant in the railway sector. In 1998, he received the W. Graham Claytor Award from Railway Age magazine for his efforts on the part of North American passenger rail traffic.
