Biographical Note

Tracy Strong (Sr.) was born August 8, 1887 in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and was a lifelong educator and social activist. He was the son of Sydney Dix Strong and the brother of Anna Louise Strong. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1908 and was a representative of the liberal Social Gospel movement. He was a leader in the YMCA beginning in Seattle in 1908. From 1926-1938 he was Secretary General of the World Committee of the YMCA, moving to Geneva office with his family. Afterwards, he was Managing Director of the YMCA and organized War Prisoners' Aid. He retired in 1953 but remained an advisor to the association. As a guest professor, he taught missionary work at the Chicago Theological Seminary and four years of history and philosophy of the YMCA at George Williams College in Chicago. In 1967, he and his wife moved to a senior citizens' residence in Olympia, Washington, where he died on March 3, 1968.
