Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Vaidynathan Dorai (1935-), better known as Guruvayur Dorai, is a percussionist from Guruvayur, India. He is recognized as an influential figure in the performance and propagation of mridangam music. As a child, he studied mridangam under Palghat Subba Iyer and E.P Narayana Pisharody and performed his first concert at the age of 8. Later on, he studied under the mridangam master Palani Subramaniam Pillai. Dorai has spent the past 60 years performing concerts and helping promote mridangam music around the world.
