In September, 1889, Washington State farmers organized the Washington State Grange. They saw the Grange as a means of fraternal cooperation in the promotion of agricultural interests, and as a method of providing education and recreation for their families. The Grange was also a vehicle for increasing the public's awareness of farmers' issues and for winning legislation to ease farmers' problems associated with the high cost of goods and services, and the low prices received for commodities. The Grange in later years became one of the principal general farmers' organizations, and as such has since functioned as a public and legislative spokeman for agricultural interests. The Grange also takes public positions of advocacy or opposition on a variety of issues such as general economic policy, transportation, and public works projects.

This group of records consists chiefly of office files of the Washington State Grange during the time that A. Lars Nelson served as State Master. The records contain the correspondence of the Washington State Grange with members of the Washington State Congressional delegation between the years 1967 and 1978, files concerned with such issues as the Family Farm Water Act campaign of 1976-1977, and various data concerning Grange public relations campaigns.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged in two sequences. The bulk of the papers are alphabetically organized in a sequence of subject files. A small second series consists of reports and and conference papers associated with annual Deputy Conferences.

Acquisition Information

The records of the Washington State Grange were donated to the Washington State University Libraries in November, 1981 (MS81-54) by Jack Silvers, State Master.
