Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Marianne Diggs Fleagle was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from Goucher College with a degree in English in 1940, and then taught high school in Baltimore. On December 19, 1942, she married Robert G. Fleagle. The couple had two children, John and Robert, Jr.
The Fleagles lived in New York between 1942 and 1948. They then moved to Seattle, where Robert began work as a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. In 1965, Marianne earned her master’s degree in library science from the University of Washington. Throughout her career, she worked as a reference librarian at the Bellevue Library and as the head librarian in Lake Forest Park.
Both Robert and Marianne were active members of the University Unitarian Church in Seattle. In 2015, the church established the Robert and Marianne Fleagle Lecture “for outstanding leaders and thinkers in liberal religion and social action.” Marianne’s volunteer work at the church also led to her involvement with organizations that assisted Native Americans in the Northwest, including the American Friends Service Committee and the Workshop in Practical Religion, of which she was the chair. As part of her involvement with the American Friends, Marianne helped to open a library on the Nisqually Reservation.
Marianne Fleagle died on April 9, 2000.
