Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948 – 1997), from Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan, was a vocalist and musician, primarily a singer of Qawwali, a form of Sufi Islamic devotional music. Khan possessed an extraordinary range of vocal abilities and could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours. He belonged to the Patiala gharana extending the 600-year old Qawwali tradition of his family, Khan helped introduce Qawwali music to international audiences.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan performs on piano, harmonium and vocals; Dildar Hussain/tabla; other members of Nusrat's ensemble/tabla, piano & vocals; UW students studying qawwali with Nusrat/vocals.

"Allah-hootenany": session in two parts (00:00 to 26:34; 26:50 to 50:49) includes "Allah Hu" and "Mera Piya Ghar Aya."
