McKernan then worked as assistant director of the Pacific Oceanic Fishery in Hawaii (1952-1955) followed by a job with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska (1955-1957).
McKernan was director of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (now known as the National Marine Fisheries Service) from 1957 until 1966.
