Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Russell Miller was born in 1894 in Shelby, Iowa. Miller graduated from Whitman College and enlisted in Company A, 347th Machine Gun Battalion, Allied Expeditionary forces, during World War I.
After entering into the officer's training camp at the Presidio of San Francisco in May, 1917, Miller received his commission as second lieutenant. He later became secretary to Lieutenant Colonel Paul H. Weyrauch of the 146th Field Artillery and trained with the 91st Division at Camp Lewis, receiving his commission as first lieutenant.
During his service between 1917 and 1919, he faced heavy fighting in the Argonne and Flanders, and was promoted to captain circa December 1918.

This collection consists chiefly of correspondence from Russell Miller to his wife in Wenatchee, Washington between June 1918 and March 1919, describing his military experiences and observations while stationed in France and Belgium. Majority of the letters include original postal covers.
Two newspaper clippings are included that announce Miller's commission as captain, circa December 1918. Miscellaneous correspondences with the Miller family are located at the end of the series. Collection is comprised of 80 items.
