Historical Note

The situation at Oakland Presbyterian Church has been analyzed by Everett L. Perry: (NOTE: Everett L. Perry, The Presbyterian Church in Metropolitan Tacoma, Department of City and Industrial Work, Board of National Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A., New York, December 1949)

"Despite the fact that the Oakland Church has been the only Protestant church in the community, it has had a declining church and Sunday school membership since the late 1920's. With a current membership [1949] of only 34, it cannot fully support even a part time minister. Several loyal families have put in much time and effort at remodeling and improvement of the church basement to be used for social purposes. Their morale has been affected by long failure to develop a worthwhile program and to secure the services of a full time minister."

Nevertheless, this church lingered on the scene long enough to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 1971. The last service was held for the congregation of about 21 members in January 1994.

Minutes, except for the period 1967-1971, are not in this file. However, from the financial and other records the history can be reconstructed.
