Biographical Note

Franklin Jay Haynes was born in 1853. He became a photographer with his first studio in Moorhead, Minnesota, ca. 1876. He became "Official Photographer, Northern Pacific Railroad" in 1881, and for 20 years, with a Pullman car as his studio and headquarters, he photographed the country and people along the Northern Pacific routes. Later he became a Yellowstone Park concessionaire, issuing a guide book and operating a fleet of six-horse stage coaches bringing in tourists from the rail stop at Monida, Montana. He retired from business in 1916 and died in 1921.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

While the collection was formerly organized by a local system (numbers on back), it was reorganized in 2009 by the original identifiers printed on the front. Those images lacking original identifiers are identified as unnumbered (unn.), the original numbering is noted, and they've been placed with images of a similar geographic location.

Acquisition Information

The F. Jay Haynes photographs were donated to the Washington State University Library by Mrs. Clinton Nuzim of Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Processing Note

This collection was processed by David Smestad in April, 1978.
