Historical NoteReturn to Top

The University of Montana began offering courses in zoology during the presidency of Clyde A. Duniway. The program began as part of the Department of Biology, but became a separate department in 1910. In 1988, the Zoology department was eliminated as part of the reorganization and creation of the Division of Biological Sciences. Zoology courses remain part of the Division of Biological Sciences curriculum.

The university has had many notable Zoology faculty members. Morton J. Elrod was influential in beginning the Department of Zoology. George F. Simmons was a faculty member both before and after the five years he served as president of The University of Montana. Philip L. Wright taught for many years and helped start and maintain the zoological specimen collection. Donald A. Jenni was the final department chair prior to the reorganization.

The Zoological museum is one of the Department of Zoology’s lasting contributions to The University of Montana. It was dedicated as the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum in 1997. The museum is accredited by the American Society of Mammalogists and contains over 21,000 pieces as of 2001. It is one of the largest collections in the Northwest. These pieces are used for research and teaching materials by the Division of Biological Sciences, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Environmental Studies and visiting researchers.

This collection contains records created by the Department of Zoology at The University of Montana from 1934-1989 including general departmental records, correspondence, faculty and staff records, student records, and financial records. This collection is divided into five series.

Series I, General Departmental Records, contains faculty and staff meeting minutes, University memos and correspondence with administrators, fellowships and scholarships, program reviews, and miscellaneous records. These records date from 1934-1988.

Series II, Correspondence, contains outgoing and incoming correspondence. These records date from 1938-1981. This series is in chronological, alphabetical order.

Series III, Faculty and Staff Records, contains faculty evaluation, faculty and staff wage and salary information, prospective employee information, and notices of vacant positions. These records date from 1937-1987. This series is currently restricted.

Series IV, Student Records, contains letters of interest and applications to the graduate program, graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate student information, student and work-study employee information, and departmental grades. These records date from 1945-1987. This series is currently restricted.

Series V, Financial Records, contains budgets, grants, expenditures, and ledgers. These records date from 1980-1989. Box 38 is currently restricted. These materials remain in their original order.

Series IV: Students Records, 6.0 linear ft., 1945-1987 - RESTRICTED

Series V: Financial Records, 4.5 linear ft. and two oversized boxes, 1980-1989

Acquisition Information

These records were transferred to the K. Ross Toole Archives on multiple occasions from 1975-1988.

Processing Note

Due to the restricted nature of the materials pertaining to personnel and students the original order of the records was not maintained. The records were sorted into five series to make unrestricted materials available. Each series is organized chronologically. Faculty and staff records, student records, and one box of financial records are currently restricted.

Separated Materials

Ten linear feet of Professor Jerry Bromenshank’s research materials were removed from this collection and placed with an existing collection of his papers. Twelve folders of James R. Templeton’s publications were moved to University Publications, Series XI, Faculty Publications. Floor plans of the Health Science building were moved to University Publications, Series III, Building Floor Plans.
