Historical Note

Mark Odom Hatfield was born in Dallas, Oregon on July 12, 1922 and was the only child of Charles D. and Dovie Odom Hatfield. Hatfield grew up in Salem, Oregon and graduated from North Salem High School in 1940. He attended Willamette University, graduating in three years in order to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1945 he participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa as a landing craft officer. Afterward, he visited Hiroshima where he witnessed the aftermath of the atomic bomb. Following his time in Japan, Hatfield was assigned to aid French troops in Vietnam.

After the war, Hatfield attended Stanford University and received his master's degree in political science in 1949. He returned to Salem and became an associate professor in the politics department at his alma mater (1949-1956). He also served as dean of students at Willamette University from 1950 to 1956. While still teaching, Hatfield became a member of the Oregon House of Representatives (1951-1955), then the Senate in 1955. Hatfield won the election for Oregon Secretary of State in 1957, and two years later became Oregon's 29th governor. He was the youngest person ever to serve in either office. He served two terms as governor before he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1966. Hatfield served five terms spanning 30 years in the U.S. Senate, becoming Oregon's longest-serving senator. His wartime experiences profoundly shaped his political views. He would be an opponent of war and nuclear arms, a pro-life and anti-death penalty supporter, and an advocate for federal spending on medical research.

Hatfield spent 46 years of his life in public service before he retired in 1997, having never lost an election during his long political career. He was the seventh most senior Senator and the second most senior Republican at the time of his retirement. He resumed his career in teaching, serving at Willamette University, Portland State University, and George Fox University. Hatfield died on August 7, 2011 at the age of 89.

Content Description

The Loren Hicks series contains publications, newspaper clippings, photographs, and campaign materials collected by Loren Hicks relating to the political career of Mark O. Hatfield. The majority of these materials can be dated to Hatfield's first and second terms as Governor of the state of Oregon. This collection includes several documents signed by Mark O. Hatfield, as well as newspaper articles recording political milestones in Hatfield's career.

The Angela Mahoney series encompases a range of materials from Senator Mark Hatfield's re-election campaign in the 1980s. It includes brochures, petition letters, flyers, correspondence, and a binder that clarifies Hatfield's stance on issues and outlines some of the projects he worked on. Other materials include campaign memorabilia such as a hat, poster, and bumper stickers; newspaper articles (1985-1997); correspondence (1966-1994); "The Sojourner File" (1983); and material pertaining to Willamette University and Oregon politics.

The Stephen Koschal series contains letters, press clippings, and photographs from Senator Hatfield to Stephen Koschal dating from 1966 to 1996. Their correspondence often included autographed photographs, memorabilia, and publications. Also included is correspondence from Hatfield's personal secretary Janet Lamos.
