Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Wizard of Oz was a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The movie was based on L. Frank Baum's children's fantasy novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The screenplay went through several writers and revisions before the final shooting. MGM hired many screenwriters including, Herman J. Mankiewicz, Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf to write separate versions of the story. They completed the final draft of the script on October 8, 1938, following numerous rewrites. It was a work of many creative minds, but Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf got the writing credits.
